How to Care for Your Steel Building

One of the great things about steel buildings is the way they can shrug off the effects of wind, rain, and other foul weather. This gives them powerful advantages over more traditional types of construction. However, as with all things, metal structures require a little maintenance every now and then. With that in mind, here are a few tips for keeping your steel buildings in tip-top shape:

At least once a year, wash your building with a mild cleaning solution. A cup of ammonia mixed with 5 gallons of clean water and applied with a sponge or low-pressure sprayer works great. Cover the building in the mixture and follow up with a rinse from a garden hose. Perform this task on a warm, clear sunny day if possible. This will remove dirt, dust, and pollutants, preventing rust and keeping the building looking its best.

Check the building every few months for scuffs and scratches. If you notice any, then it’s important to find out whether the mark has cut into the underlying metal. If it has, then you should touch up the spot with anti—rust primer. If the abrasion is only on the surface, then a quick buff can often remove the blemish.

If your building is insulated, then it’s important to check the insulation every now and then for moisture damage, signs of insect infestation, and other problems. Sometimes these problems are obvious, other times they require a close visual inspection.

Treat any holes or cracks in the metal with a steel repair compound. This will prevent leaks that could lead to further problems with the building or damage its contents.
